Wimbledon Tennis Replaces Line Judges with AI

Source: Wimbledon

This year, Wimbledon fully replaced human line judges with an AI-powered electronic line calling (ELC) system—but not without controversy. Developed by Hawk-Eye, the ELC was deployed for the first time on all 18 courts at the 2025 Championships, ending 147 years of line judging tradition at the All England Club (watch Demo). The system tracks balls in real time using 12 discreet cameras per court and makes the ā€œoutā€ and ā€œfaultā€ calls previously handled by line umpires, with a 50-person team overseeing operations. Despite the All England Club’s claims of superior accuracy, players including Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper have criticized the system for missed calls and even a total failure that halted play (see Wimbledon’s announcement).

AI Meets Amazon Prime Day in a $24B Shopping Surge

Source: Amazon

U.S. online retailers are expected to generate a record $23.8 billion in spending during the week of Amazon’s Prime Day (July 8–11)—$9.6 billion more than the same period last year, according to Adobe Analytics. This total includes spending on Amazon and purchases from other major retailers launching their own discounts to capture Prime Day-driven demand. The standout trend is the explosive 3,200% year-over-year growth in traffic from generative AI sources. Consumers are increasingly using AI tools to receive product recommendations, seek deals, get present ideas, find unique products, and create shopping lists. AI-powered shopping is quickly evolving from novelty to necessity (see Adobe’s report).

ChatGPT Experiments with Interactive Study Feature

Source: ChatGPT

Some ChatGPT users are spotting a new feature called ā€œStudy Togetherā€ in their tool list. This experimental mode shifts the chatbot into a more interactive role—asking questions rather than simply responding to them. The approach appears to echo Google’s LearnLM, a family of models fine-tuned for learning in collaboration with education experts. Speculation is growing that ā€œStudy Togetherā€ could eventually support group study chats and other collaborative learning tools. OpenAI has not yet officially commented on the feature or confirmed whether it will be exclusive to ChatGPT Plus (explore more of OpenAI’s research).
