OpenAI's Quest to Control Superhuman AI

Did you know that the race to create superhuman AI could potentially alter the course of humanity? Amidst a backdrop of rapid advancements and looming concerns, OpenAI stands at the forefront, grappling with a question that echoes science fiction: How do we control an intelligence greater than our own?

OpenAI's Superalignment Team

OpenAI, a leader in AI research, recently formed the Superalignment team, a group dedicated to a daunting yet essential mission. They're tasked with developing methods “to steer and control AI systems much smarter than us“ (read more). The team's conception in July marked a pivotal moment, signaling OpenAI's recognition of the urgency and magnitude of this challenge.

Can Humans Supervise Superhuman AI?

The central dilemma facing the Superalignment team is both profound and paradoxical. How can we align AI models that are smarter than us, ensuring they adhere to our intentions and ethical standards? This challenge is magnified by the fact that the very nature of “superintelligence” is a subject of intense debate and uncertainty within the AI community.

An excerpt from OpenAI’s recent research report describes the potential problem at hand:

“Future AI systems will be capable of extremely complex and creative behaviors that will make it hard for humans to reliably supervise them. For example, superhuman models may be able to write millions of lines of novel—and potentially dangerous—computer code that would be very hard even for expert humans to understand.”

Could AI Supervising AI be the Answer?

In an effort to safely control superhuman AI in the future, a novel approach has emerged from the team's innovative minds. They propose the use of a weaker AI model, such as GPT-2, to guide a more advanced model, like GPT-4, toward desirable outcomes (read more). This method, known as “Weak-to-Strong Generalization”, has shown “promising initial results”. Though still in its infancy, GPT-2 successfully supervised GPT-4 for specified tasks by controlling the newer model’s performance capabilities (read full paper here).

Now, OpenAI is reaching out to the machine learning (ML) community and has launched a $10 million grants program to advance superhuman AI alignment research. Overall, this research represents a significant shift in thinking about how to manage and control the potentially overwhelming power of superintelligent AI, hinting at a future rich with collaborative efforts.
