🚨FEATURE STORY

OpenAI Unveils Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT
Imagine a world where AI can not only converse but adapt seamlessly to interruptions, narrate stories with natural tones, and avoid imitating real people's voices. This world is inching closer to reality with OpenAI's latest innovation.
Enhanced Features for ChatGPT Plus
OpenAI has started rolling out its advanced voice mode for ChatGPT to a select group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This feature, showcased at the GPT-4o launch event in May, promises a more interactive and intuitive voice experience. Initially set for a June release, it was postponed to ensure it met OpenAI’s high safety and performance standards.
The Scarlett Johansson Controversy
The rollout faced significant hurdles, particularly around safety and authenticity. Criticism arose over the AI's voice resembling Scarlett Johansson’s, echoing her role in the movie Her. Concerns about unauthorized voice impersonation and content safety led to a delay as OpenAI worked on refining these aspects.
Addressing these issues head-on, OpenAI collaborated with over 100 external testers to rigorously challenge and refine the voice model to meet safety standards. This comprehensive testing aimed to enhance the model's ability to detect and block inappropriate content while ensuring it could not impersonate real individuals.
OpenAI’s Plans to Expand
The revamped voice mode now features four unique voices created with professional voice actors. Spokesperson Taya Christianson emphasized the robust measures in place to prevent voice impersonation. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to expand this advanced voice mode to all ChatGPT Plus users by fall. This development not only sets a new standard for AI voice technology but also hints at a future where AI interactions are more secure, ethical, and engaging (watch launch event).
