OpenAIās New Approach: A Quieter, More Focused DevDay
What happens when a tech giant decides to dial down the dazzle? Last year, OpenAI hosted a high-profile event in San Francisco, unveiling numerous new products, including the semi-flop GPT Store. This year, the tech giant is taking a more subdued approach, turning its DevDay into a series of smaller, on-the-road developer engagement sessions. The tour will kick off in San Francisco on October 1, move to London on October 30, and conclude in Singapore on November 21.
No ChatGPT-5 Announcement
The decision not to announce the new flagship model GPT-5 during DevDay has stirred the developer community, raising questions about OpenAI's current pace of innovation. The challenge of acquiring high-quality training data has also been a significant hurdle, with over 35% of the top 1,000 websites blocking OpenAIās web crawler, GPTBot, according to recently updated data from Originality AI.
Incremental Improvements Over New Models
OpenAIās emphasis on incremental improvements and developer education during DevDay signals a significant strategic pivot (read OpenAIās announcement). Instead of rolling out new models, the company is focused on refining its existing APIs and developer services, showcasing practical applications and success stories from the community.
Attendees can look forward to immersive workshops that explore the depths of the OpenAI platform, insightful breakout sessions on model customization, scaling, and more, as well as demos that showcase the product teams and their cutting-edge models in action. Developer spotlights will highlight the most innovative projects from the community, culminating in an evening reception complete with dinner, drinks, and entertainment. Registration is $450, with limited scholarships available. Applications close on Thursday, August 15, so if youāre interested, be sure to apply here.

Google Pulls Controversial AI Ad from Olympics

Source: Google (via YouTube)
Google has pulled its "Dear Sydney" ad after backlash over its use of AI to write a heartfelt letter. The ad, which featured a father using Google's Gemini AI to draft a fan letter to US track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, was criticized for missing the point of genuine human connection. Viewers and critics argued that personal letters should be authentic and reflect individual effort, something AI-generated content lacks. Google's intent was to showcase Gemini as a helpful tool for drafting ideas, but the ad instead highlighted ongoing concerns about AI's role in personal expression (see Googleās controversial ad).
Apple's AI āApple Intelligenceā Tiptoes Around Taboos

Source: Apple
Apple's new AI-powered Writing Tools in iOS 18.1 stumble when faced with swear words and controversial topics, often issuing warnings and occasionally offering awkward suggestions. When users attempt to rewrite text containing words like "s**t", or mention sensitive subjects like drugs or murder, the tool cautions that it wasn't designed for such content. This limitation showcases Apple's cautious approach to AI, aiming to avoid controversy and potential regulatory backlash by steering clear of generating or reformatting problematic content (see more on Apple Intelligence).
YouTube Integrates Google Gemini for Creator Innovation

Source: YouTube via its Creator Insider channel
YouTube is testing a groundbreaking feature that integrates Google Gemini to help creators brainstorm video ideas, titles, and thumbnails. This innovative tool, currently in limited testing, aims to give YouTube an edge over other platforms by leveraging AI to enhance content creation. Creators will be able to explore new ideas and streamline their production process within YouTube Studio, choosing between the existing inspiration tool and the new Brainstorm with Gemini feature. This move underscores YouTube's commitment to supporting its creators with cutting-edge AI technology (see YouTubeās announcement at 0:46 seconds).

Elon Musk Renews Legal War Against OpenAI! Elon Musk has reignited his legal battle against OpenAI, accusing co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of deceiving him into supporting a "spurious non-profit venture". The product launched to overwhelmingly negative reviews, with critics citing functionality issues.
OpenAI Leadership Shake-Up ā Key Founders on the Move: In a significant shake-up, OpenAI co-founder John Schulman has departed to join Anthropic, where he plans to deepen his focus on AI alignment.
