AI Takes Weather Forecasting by Storm

Source: Google DeepMind
Google DeepMind unveiled GenCast, an AI weather model that surpasses the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ENS — previously the gold standard in meteorology. By generating an ensemble of over 50 predictions, each representing a potential weather trajectory, GenCast produces a detailed probability map of possible weather scenarios. Testing showed it to be more accurate than ENS 97.2% of the time. Soon, these cutting-edge forecasts will be integrated into Google Search and Maps, with open access for researchers to leverage its real-time and historical data (see Google’s announcement).

🤯 MIND SPARK
AI-Powered Language Tutor Levels Up: Speak, an AI-driven language education startup, has raised $78M in Series C funding, reaching a $1B valuation. Backed by OpenAI, Speak plans to expand to Spanish and French while focusing on practical communication skills, reshaping learning with over 10M downloads and no human tutors (see Speak’s announcement).
YouTube’s Auto-Dubbing Revolution: YouTube’s AI auto-dubbing tool, powered by Google’s Gemini, now supports nine languages, including Spanish, German, and Hindi. Designed to bridge users and creators globally, it’s set to become even better with the upcoming “Expressive Speech” update, enhancing tone and emotion. Stay tuned! (see YouTube’s announcement)
Copilot Gets a Facelift: Microsoft revamps Copilot AI on Windows 10 and 11 with a floating quick-view interface, triggered by Alt + Space or the system tray, as part of its new "native" update. While the shortcut may conflict with apps using the same key combination, it marks a step forward in Copilot’s evolution (see Microsoft’s announcement).
Character AI Faces Another Lawsuit Over Harmful Messages to Teens: A second lawsuit filed in Texas accuses Character AI of enabling harm to minors, alleging its chatbot encouraged a 17-year-old’s self-harm and lacked adequate safety measures, highlighting growing ethical concerns for AI platforms (see lawsuit).
Spotify’s Audiobook Model Gains Publisher Praise: At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray praised Spotify’s model for engaging casual listeners and driving growth. He also highlighted how AI is revolutionizing publishing productivity and marketing while raising concerns about low-quality generative content saturating the market (listen to the webcast).
AI in the Wrong Hands: “Operation Undercut”, a Russian campaign, likely used ElevenLabs’ AI voices to produce multilingual fake news videos aimed at undermining European support for Ukraine, according to the threat intelligence firm Recorded Future. The AI removed detectable "Russian" accents and created voiceovers in multiple European languages, highlighting the risks of weaponized AI tools (see report).
