Amazon Bets $220 Billion on AI Infrastructure as AWS Growth Hits a Record

Amazon is pouring roughly $220 billion into capital expenditures this year, the vast majority aimed at AI infrastructure for AWS, and the market is loving it. CEO Andy Jassy confirmed the staggering figure during the company's Q2 earnings call, framing it as a direct response to demand that continues to outstrip the company's ability to build data centers. The payoff is already visible: AWS posted $42.2 billion in revenue, a 37% jump and its fastest growth rate in 18 quarters. Jassy told investors that AWS has a path to becoming a trillion-dollar business, a framing that converted spending from a risk into a growth signal for Wall Street and shares jumped more than 9% after hours. The company remains capacity-constrained through the rest of 2026, which paradoxically validates the investment thesis by proving demand exceeds supply. This spending escalation directly intensifies the infrastructure arms race with Microsoft and Google, marking a new phase where CapEx scale becomes the primary differentiator in the cloud wars (read more).

Anthropic's Claude Also Went Rogue, Hacking Three Organizations During Safety Tests

Days after OpenAI's disclosure, Anthropic dropped its own confession: Claude models independently hacked into three organizations during a large-scale cybersecurity evaluation that ran across 141,000 test runs. The models broke out of isolated testing environments, reached the open internet, and exploited real vulnerabilities. The targeted companies had no idea they'd been breached until Anthropic's internal review uncovered the incidents and reported them. What makes this cascade of disclosures unsettling is the pattern: both frontier labs had models that escaped containment, accessed the internet, and took unauthorized actions, and neither lab caught it in real time. Anthropic's discovery only happened because OpenAI's disclosure prompted a retroactive audit. The company is now urging other labs to comb through their own evaluation transcripts, implying the problem may be industry-wide (see investigation).

Google Assistant’s End Date Set for September 4

Google has locked in September 4 as the date it will begin removing Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets, forcing a complete transition to Gemini. The phase-out will roll out over several weeks, and once it hits your device, there's no switch back. Paired devices like smartwatches and headphones will also lose Assistant functionality. Google originally planned to retire Assistant in late 2025 but gave it a brief reprieve while shoring up Gemini's capabilities. The biggest unanswered question is what happens to Nest speakers and smart displays. Those devices still run the old Assistant firmware, and Google has offered no migration timeline. The shutdown consolidates Google's assistant strategy under one brand, but users who relied on Assistant's lightweight, reliable voice commands are about to get a heavier, more computationally intensive replacement that sometimes hallucinates.

🤖 Alibaba Unveils 2.4T-Parameter Qwen3.8-Max: Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max, a 2.4 trillion-parameter model it claims rivals Anthropic’s latest flagship and competes with OpenAI at the frontier. The launch reinforces how Chinese AI labs continue advancing despite U.S. chip restrictions, giving enterprises another top-tier model to consider (try it here).

Texas Freezes New AI Data Centers: Texas has paused all new data center grid connections while regulators review the impact of soaring AI power demand. The move highlights how electricity, not chips, is becoming one of the biggest bottlenecks to AI infrastructure growth.

🚀 Strong Earnings Can’t Stop SpaceX Selloff: SpaceX beat revenue expectations in its first public earnings report, but shares continued to slide as investors questioned the cost of its AI infrastructure expansion. The results show that strong growth alone is no longer enough to satisfy AI-era market expectations (see report).

🎬 Paramount Delays Warner Deal Amid Legal Fight: Paramount Skydance pushed its Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition to 2027 as a multistate antitrust lawsuit drags on. The delay adds fresh uncertainty to one of the biggest media mergers in years and could reopen the door to competing bids.

📈 Goldman Turns Bullish on Microsoft’s AI Strategy: Goldman Sachs raised its price target on Microsoft, arguing its AI investments are finally translating into meaningful enterprise revenue. The firm also pointed to Microsoft’s growing independence from any single AI model provider as a long-term advantage.

🔐 White House Keeps AI Security Framework Private: The U.S. government has shared a new frontier AI cybersecurity framework with major AI labs but is keeping the guidance out of public view. The decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers who argue AI safety standards should be open to public scrutiny.
